 2023 Preview 


       Southside completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region three, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Southside's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Dadeville by a score of 33-8.

       The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Southside had a very good offense last year, scoring 37.6 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 38.8 points per game.

       Since 2010, Southside has gone a combined 54-81. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Southside has managed to compile a record of 104-154. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 3A and 282nd in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Charles Moody Jr. who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 26-17 over the past four seasons at Southside. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Moody Jr.. Over the course of his career, Coach Moody Jr.'s teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times .

       The Panthers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season.

      Derick Smith will be returning this fall to Southside. He is considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2025.

       The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Selma on Friday, September 1 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Selma Saints finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 5A region three. The Saints lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Tallassee by a score of 49-16.

       Southside and Selma have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 9-32-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2022 with Selma winning by a score of 36-8.

       Southside lost 3A All-State  athlete Roosevelt Towns III to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

       The Panthers return 3A All-State Junior defensive back Derick Smith. He was named to the first team last season.
